What I Learned From R&B Singer Songwriter Kelly Price

Recently I had the pleasure of meeting R&B singer and songwriter, Kelly Price, during WABE’s Closer Look with Rose Scott, and to say that she is such a humble and genuine person would be an understatement.

One thing that stuck out the most for me from that conversation with her, was her constant reminder about being intentional about your decisions.

In other words, make the best decision possible for you. You have to decide who you want to be, what you will and will not accept, and all of the things your future will hold.

Price explained that there are a lot of people in this world that will try to influence you and use you for their gain, but the best way to navigate it all is to be intentional about your decisions.

She then told a story about a moment during the beginning stages of her career when someone from her record label asked her what she needed to get through her music session– Because according to this person, everyone needed something to get through their session (i.e alcohol, drugs, etc…), and whatever she needed, he was going to get it for her. In response to his question, Price requested that he just leave her session completely (we stan a large-and-in-charge queen!).

In that moment, Price made an intentional decision about herself and her career. An intentional decision to be true to herself, and not be what others project her to be. An intentional decision to not allow herself to be placed inside of someone else’s box.

In my own personal journey of learning myself, this advice couldn’t have come at a better time.

So here, and now, I am making the intentional decision to make more intentional decisions. And I invite you, my friend, to join me.
